Pieter Smal (1989 -) is a pianist, composer, and music teacher, specialising in video game sound and music.
After studying piano with Adrien Lubbe in Newcastle, Pieter enrolled for a B.Mus. degree at the University of Pretoria where he studied piano with Prof. Joseph Stanford and composition with Prof. Alexander Johnson. Pieter also visited Finland as an exchange student at the University of Jyväskylä (2014). In 2017 Pieter finished his M.Mus. degree in musicology at the University of Pretoria with a dissertation entitled Constructing a model musical idiom for video game soundtracks.
Beyond formal studies, Pieter received masterclasses from Malcolm Nay, Luís Magalhães, and Nina Schumann (piano), and composition classes from Mia Makaroff and Prof. Ivan Moody. Other accolades include Pieter’s position as a finalist in the UNISA Grade 8 Scholarship Competition (2009), as well as receiving two SAMRO bursaries for composition (2012/2013).
