The video game diegesis of the Tomb Raider franchise often draws on folk- and mythological lore, including the Arthurian legends about Excalibur, the Japanese shaman queen Himiko, and the Norse cosmological world tree called Yggdrasil. The 2015 video game Rise of the Tomb Raider reinterprets the legend of the Holy Grail set against a Russian backdrop.
My article entitled Lara Croft and the search for the Holy Grail explores semiotics in Rise of the Tomb Raider. I present three possible interpretations of the Holy Grail in the game, and investigate the appearances and meanings of quasi-Christian symbolism. Related religious concepts are also discussed with reference to Gnosticism, Christ and Anti-Christ, and sacred bloodlines. My article reveals a deeper metanarrative worth exploring as Lara Croft and a secret society named Trinity competes to acquire the legendary ‘cup of Christ’.
